Installing Showman into Windows 95 or Windows 98 - Need for Additional Microsoft Support Files

  • Please read the information lower down on this page about Identifying which version of Windows you have and Downloading the Additional Support Files you may need.

Although the following may look complex, in reality this is not so - the downloads of DCom and MDac (if needed) shouldn't take long on broadband, and installation of these two items, once downloaded, is a 'one click' operation apart from accepting Microsoft's Licence Agreement.

Once you have the files you need, as described below-

  • Windows95 users - Run DCOM95.Exe FIRST, and then run MDac_typ.exe SECOND
  • Windows98 users, just run MDac_typ.exe
  • During installation of DCOM or MDAC, you should RESTART the PC if and when it requests to do this. I suggest that you choose ‘Restart Now’ rather than delay the restart.
  • I advise against installing the NEXT pack in the list until after the previous pack has fully installed, including rebooting, if a reboot is requested by the installer.
  • N.B. The Microsoft System Upgrade Packages DCom95.Exe and/or Mdac_typ.Exe do NOT need any special treatment. When they are run they will automatically update Windows with just minor intervention from you.

During the Installation of DCOM or MDAC, you will have to accept Microsoft’s End User Licence Agreement. The installation of MDAC may appear to ‘Stop’ at times - there doesn’t appear to be any activity - this is normal - just wait a few seconds and it will continue.

  • You do not need to install either of these two files if you are using Windows ME (Millennium Edition)

The following list should help you decide which, if any,of the two additional files you will need to download.

  • Right Click on 'My Computer' and click on 'Properties' at the bottom of the list.

On the 'General' tab, under 'System' you will see information about Windows - If the information shows -

Windows 95 version 4.00.950 you have the FIRST VERSION of Windows 95 - Windows 95A

Windows 95 version 4.00.95B (or C) is Windows 95B (or 95C)

Windows 98 4.10.1998 is Windows 98 Original version

Windows 98 4.10.1222A is Windows 98 Second Edition

If you are running Windows 95 (any version) you must -

Step 1 - Download Microsoft DCOM and then RUN Dcom95.Exe.

Step 2 - Download Microsoft MDAC and then RUN Mdac_typ.Exe

Step 3 - Download and Install ShowMan 2.6 by running ShowMan26.Exe

If you are running Windows 98 (any version) you must -

Step 1 - Download Microsoft MDAC and then RUN Mdac_typ.Exe

Step 2 - Download and Install ShowMan 2.6 by running ShowMan26.Exe

I suggest you Download any required files to the folder that to which you downdoad ShowMan26.Exe. (eg; C:\Temp).

I also suggest that you BACK UP these files once you have downloaded them, preferably to a CD, to avoid having to download these files again. You can RUN any of these files directly from the CD in future.

Once these files are suitably 'Backed Up' you can then delete them from your hard disk if you wish.

Download Microsoft DCOM95 (File 'DCom95.Exe' - app. 1.3 megabytes)

Download Microsoft MDAC Version 2.5 (File 'Mdac_Typ.Exe' - app. 7.8 megabytes)

These two files will contain ALL of the extra files needed to allow you to RUN ShowMan 2.6 on WINDOWS 95 and 98.
