Mailing Labels Version 1 For Windows 95/98/Me and Version 2 for Windows 2000/Xp/Vista/Windows 7

Please read ALL of this brief document BEFORE installing the 'Mailing Labels' programme.

How to Identify your version of Mailing Labels

  • Start Mailing Labels and watch the startup screen, which appears for a few seconds.
  • If NO VERSION NUMBER is displayed, then you have version 1
  • The version number will be displayed on all later releases. The current release is Version 2

Before Installing 'Mailing Labels'

  • If you have not used Mailing Labels before, and wish to use it in Windows 95, 98 or Me, you should download and install Version 1
  • Mailing Labels Version 2 is NOT compatible with Windows 95, 98 or Me, and will not install into these operating systems.
  • If you have already installed Version 1 of this programme onto your PC, and are running it in Windows 95, 98 or Me then you do not need to do anything.
  • If you are running Mailing Labels Version 1 in Windows Xp you will benefit in changing to version 2 as described below under 'Moving Data and Configuration Files to version 2'

Moving Data and Configuration Files to Version 2

If you have been using Version 1 and wish to UPGRADE to version 2, Please read this section FIRST to avoid Data Loss

Version 1 uses the following folders for Data storage -

  • The folder C:\Program Files\Mailing Labels\Data to store your Data Files (type '.Nad')
  • The folder C:\Program Files\Mailing Labels\Logos to store your Logo Files
  • The folder C:\Program Files\Mailing Labels\ to store your CONFIGURATION File (Mlabels.Cfg)

These folders are NOT compatible with Windows Vista or Windows 7, and can cause problems in Windows Xp

  • FIRST - Make a BACKUP folder on a suitable device - eg a USB thumb drive (best option), floppy disk (unreliable) or use a temporary folder on your hard disk.

I suggest you call your Backup Folder something like MLBak dd-mm-yy where dd-mm-yy is the date of the backup - eg; MLBak 21-1-10

Copy the Data and Logos folders INCLUDING ALL Files in these two folders to say - X:\MLBak 21-1-10\Data and X:\MLBak 21-1-10\Logos where X is the name of the drive\disk on which you will store your Backup.

Also, copy the file Mlabels.Cfg to the same backup location - eg; X:\MLBak 21-1-10

  • IMPORTANT - After the Copy operation, the check that ALL files have been copied and are still INSIDE the SAME folders as they were in the ORIGINAL location.

The screenshots below show some examples -

    • N.B. the drive used as the 'Backup Drive' in this case was drive 'i:'
    • The contents of the Data and Logos folders may well be different on your machine
    • Screenshots were taken from panels displayed in Total Commander.
    • I recommend Total Commander for tasks such as the creation of Folders and Copying Files and Folders (and much more) - download it from www.ghisler.com - you can find out more about this programme by visiting the Computer Topics page on this site

This screenshot shows the contents of the DATA folder - here there are three NAD (Name and Address) files in this folder.

This screenshot shows the contents of the Logos folder - here two Logo files in this folder.

If you use the structure describe above, you will be able to RESTORE your files to Mailing Labels version 2 with just one mouse click.

  • If you are sure that the files and folders have been copied correctly, UNINSTALL Mailing Labels version 1 as described at the bottom of this page.

Next -

  • Install Version 2 of Mailing Labels

  • Go to the Restore page in version 2, and use the browse controls on that page to locate your backup folder eg; X:\MLBak 21-1-10

  • Then click the button to Restore your Data and Configuration files.

  • The Help file and/or Manual for version 2 describes the NEW location for your Data and Configuration files.

Handling the Downloaded Files, Installation and General

The programme is distributed as self-installing package called 'mlpak32.exe' (version 1) or 'MLabels2.Exe' (version 2)

Copy the downloaded '.EXE' to a suitable empty folder - eg C:\Temp, and run it. Follow the instruction to install the programme.

  • Back up the original downloaded '.EXE' file if you think you might want to reinstall again at some future time.

If, during installation, you get a message that Windows MUST be restarted, you should let Windows restart.

Sample Data and Logo files will be installed into the Data and Logos folders, and a Default Configuration file will also be installed.

If you are new to Mailing Labels, Back these files up. You will then be able to restore these files at any time while you test and experiment. Also back up the '.CFG' file in the program installation folder, for the same reason.

A 'TEMP' folder is also created in the installation folder. If you find any files in this folder, from time to time, you can delete them. DO NOT delete the TEMP folder, as it is used by the program while it is working.

The application 'Help' file will provide more information on the facilities provided by the programme.

UNINSTALLING this PROGRAM

Use 'Control Panel', 'Add/Remove Programs', select 'Mailing Labels', click on 'Uninstall',
